Iran and Egypt boosting air transport ties

TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- An Iranian delegation arrived in Cairo Sunday on a mission to expand cooperation on tourism and air transport, officials said.

Egyptian Transport Minister Alaa el-Deen Mohamed Fahmy welcomed the delegation at the Cairo airport, Iran's Fars Agency reported.

A private Egyptian airline recently signed a $1.4 million deal with Iran's Kish Air to provide air service for the next eight years.

The Iranian visit is seen as a prelude to resuming diplomatic relations between the two countries, which Iran broke off in 1980 over Egypt's peace with Israel.

Ties were further strained during the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in December 2008 and January 2009. Tehran criticized Egypt for its refusal to open the Rafah border crossing.
