Cameroon rebels free 6 hostages

DOUALA, Cameroon, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A rebel group has released six sailors abducted from a dredger operated by a Belgian company, the government of Cameroon says.

Four of the hostages are from Ukraine, one is from Croatia and the sixth is a Filipino, the BBC reported. They were taken Sept. 12 by the Africa Marine Commando from a dredger near the port of Douala.

The vessel was leased to Jan de Nul, a Belgian firm.

The AMC had demanded that eight of its members held by the government be released.

The group is a split-off from the Bakassi Freedom Fighters. Both groups are based in the Bakassi Peninsula, a region transferred to Cameroon in 2008 after an international court ruling in a dispute between that country and Nigeria.

The AMC kidnapped several Chinese sailors in March, releasing them after five days.
