Medvedev calls for Russia-China friendship

BEIJING, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in a visit to China, called on the youth of both nations to carry on the friendship forged in World War II.

Medvedev made the remarks in a meeting Sunday with more than 20 Chinese and Russian veterans who participated in China's fight against the Japanese invasion of China that began in 1937, China's official news agency Xinhua reported.

Medvedev arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday and laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war dead.

He thanked China for renovating the memorial, one of more than 70 memorials to Soviet Union war dead throughout China.

Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China, his second state visit to the country since he assumed the presidency in May 2008.

After Dalian he flew to Beijing, where he will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Xinhua reported.
