Authorities say swastika attack is a hoax

MALMO, Sweden, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A Swedish politician who claimed two men carved a swastika into his forehead probably injured himself, a medical examiner said.

David von Arnold Antoni, a Democratic candidate for the Malmo council, claimed two masked, "Arab-sounding," men pinned him to the floor in his home and carved the Nazi symbol on his forehead.

But a medical examiner's report said: "The position and appearance of the injury provide strong indications that it was self-inflicted," and concluded there is 90 percent likelihood the story is a hoax, the Swedish news agency TT reported Sunday.

Antoni denied inflicting the injuries on himself.

Police found no evidence of a break-in at Antoni's home and he was being investigated for filing a false report.

In an open letter assailing the alleged incident, Sweden's Democratic Party leader Jimmie Akesson called it "one of the worst political acts our country has seen in modern times.

"Judging from our contact with him and the knowledge we have of him, there is nothing to support this version," Akesson's letter said. "He has come across as a person who is stable and down-to-earth."
