STRINAGAR, India, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Security forces in Kashmir opened fire Tuesday on protesters defying a state-ordered curfew, injuring three, officials said.
Curfews were imposed throughout Kashmir in response to widespread violence Monday that resulted in the deaths of 18 people and the wounding of about 80 others, CNN reported.
It was the highest single-day death toll in the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley since June.
A cycle of violence in Kashmir has led to frequent shutdowns and curfews in the last three months, Ani India reported. Two missionary schools and many government buildings have been burned.
As violence continued Tuesday, authorities deployed thousands of police and paramilitary troops to enforce around-the-clock curfew restrictions.
Police in Baramulla in northern Kashmir said two people were injured, one critically. A third protester was injured in the capital of Strinagar when police opened fire on a mob throwing stones.
