Commission will investigate Pakistan floods

LAHORE, Pakistan, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A judicial commission will attempt to find out why dikes failed in flooding in Pakistan, an official said.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced the group's formation, and said it will visit areas affected by the deadly floods, Dawn News reported Monday.

Widespread flooding has affected 20 million people in Pakistan, and officials in another region are concerned water could spill over gates at Manchhar Lake, near Sehwan Tehsil's Bobak city, flooding Sehwan Airport and the Sehwan-Hyderabad Indus Highway.

Dike failures there could also endanger the 200,000 residents of Bhan Saeedabad, GEO TV said Monday.

Floods in Pakistan have killed more than 1,600 people and left nearly 3 million homeless.
