Gambia releases jailed British missionary

LONDON, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- The West African nation of Gambia has released a British missionary jailed for sedition, the British Foreign Office confirmed.

The Foreign Office told The Daily Telegraph Gambia informed it of David Fulton's release on Friday but it was not certain he had returned home.

Fulton's wife Fiona was freed last December and deported back to Britain after a year of hard labor.

The couple were jailed in December 2008 after admitting sedition for sending a letter to opponents of the former British colony's authoritarian government.

At the time of his wife's release, the Foreign Office said Fulton, 61, was serving three years' imprisonment on an additional charge of forgery.

The couple were reportedly advised to admit the sedition charges in a bid for leniency. But the tactic backfired when they were sentenced to hard labor.

The Fultons moved to Gambia 13 years ago to work as missionaries.

David Fulton worked as a chaplain in the Gambian army while his wife looked after terminally ill people, visiting women in their homes and in hospitals.
