The exact number of missing persons will be known only after the rescue operation is over," police official Pramod Sonkar said.

The accident occurred when the victims were traveling to Chapda after completing a bath in the Narmada River at Nemawar to mark Amavasya, or the new moon.

One official said he feared the number of dead would increase, based on reports from passengers who swam to safety who said the 52-seat bus was overcrowded with nearly 25 to 30 extra people inside and another 15 to 20 sitting on the vehicle's roof.
