SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A shooting in a shoe factory in northern Honduras left 18 people dead and several others injured, police said.
Two men armed with AK-47 assault rifles went into the factory in San Pedro Sula and opened fire, CNN reported Wednesday.
By the time police arrived minutes later, 13 people were dead in the building, San Pedro Sula Police chief Hector Ivan Mejia said. Five other people died at a hospital, he said.
Mejia said police haven't uncovered a motive for the shootings and no arrests have been made.
"We will not rest until capturing the persons responsible," he said.
The factory is in an area reputed to be under the control of the Mara 18, a ruthless street gang with ties throughout Central America and the U.S. West Coast, Mejia said.
He said drug trafficking has grown in the area in recent years, but police had no reason to think the shooting was drug-related.
