Heavy death toll among Iraqi journalists

BAGHDAD, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- More reporters and journalists have been killed in Iraq since 2003 than in any conflict since World War II, Reporters Without Borders said Tuesday.

The group said at least 230 journalists were killed between March 2003 and August 2010.

While 12 were killed during the invasion, the death toll remained low until 2004, when it began rising. Deaths of news people have dropped sharply since peaking in early 2007.

Many of those who have died were assassinated. Insurgents or criminals have abducted at least 93 journalists, killing 42 of them.

Reporters Without Borders released a report, The Iraq War: A Heavy Death Toll for the Media, which said 93 percent of the journalists who have been killed were men and 87 percent were Iraqi.

Al-Iraqiyah, a state-run TV network, lost 14 employees through August, the heaviest toll of any news organization. Riyad Assariyeh, 35, became the 15th journalist killed in Iraq this year Tuesday morning.
