LONDON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- The former editor of News of the World, now British Prime Minister David Cameron's press secretary, faces police questioning, a top official said Tuesday.
John Yates, an assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, told a parliamentary committee an investigation into phone hacking will be evaluated after Andy Coulson is interviewed, The Guardian reported.
Clive Goodman, a reporter on the royal beat at the News of the World, and a private investigator who worked with him received prison sentences four years ago for hacking into cellphones, including those belonging to members of the royal family. Coulson resigned as editor, while saying Goodman acted on his own.
The New York Times recently ran an article on the phone hacking that quoted Simon Hoare, a reporter who worked for Coulson at the Sun and the News of the World. Hoare said he played recordings of hacked phone messages for Coulson.
Yates would not say police were reopening the investigation, suggesting it had never really been closed. Critics say investigators were too quick to assume Goodman was acting on his own initiative.
