BERLIN, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A Berlin anti-corruption group called for the Algerian government to ensure the safety of an Algerian activist following his recent arrest.

Djilali Hadjadj, president of an Algerian anti-corruption group, L'Association Algerienne de Lutte Contre la Corruption, was arrested Sunday at the airport in Constantine but has not yet been formally charged, Transparency International in Berlin reported.

Hadjadj's arrest seems to be connected to a case involving his former employer, the Caisse Nationale d'Assurance Sante, TI said.

A human-rights organization in the area said Hadjadj has been in contact with his wife and lawyer, but TI said it is concerned about his security and health.

Family members said Hadjadj will be transferred Tuesday to Algiers, where they expect a formal arraignment.

Hadjadj has worked for years to prevent and stop Algerian corruption, TI said.

The Berlin group said it is asking the Algerian government for a legal, transparent process, with no bureaucratic obstacles or delay tactics.
