Mother said Josh Powell threatened her
KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Officials said they fear as many as 270 people died in two separate riverboat accidents in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the weekend.
Up to 200 people were feared dead after a boat tipped and caught fire on the Kasai River in Kasai Occidental province, officials said.
Seventy of an estimated 100 passengers may have died after a boat capsized on the Rupi River in the African country's northwestern Equateur province Saturday, Pimedia Broadcasting in South Africa reported Monday.
Officials said the boat apparently struck a submerged tree trunk.
A Congolese minister told the BBC there should not have been any passengers on board the boat that caught fire.
Mende Omalanga, a government spokesman, told CNN Sunday 24 people escaped the blaze, but an unknown number of unauthorized passengers were missing.
