KILBRIDE, Newfoundland, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Authorities in Canada Sunday confirmed they had found the remains of one missing woman but weren't ready to do so in a second case.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Sunday night human remains found in a wooded area last week were those of Ann Marie Shirran, a 32-year-old mother of one who was last seen July 18 at her St. John's home.
"Foul play is suspected," Constable Jennifer Clarke said in a statement.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said campers staying near Cappahayden had found the remains Thursday.
Meanwhile, Ontario Provincial Police said investigators had not directly tied human remains found near Orangeville Sunday to Orangeville nurse Sonia Varaschin, who vanished a week earlier, the CBC reported.
However, provincial police Constable Jonathan Beckett said police have been in touch with Varaschin's family about the discovery.
He would not say whether the body, found by a walker in isolated woods several miles outside Orangeville, is male or female, or how long it had been there. The remains were to be examined by a coroner in Toronto.
Varaschin's bloodstained car was found behind the town hall Monday, leading investigators to believe she met with foul play.
Police were ooking for a cream-colored or beige sheet and comforter missing from the bedroom of the townhouse where Varaschin lived alone.
The items may have blood on them.
