NUREMBERG, Germany, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A vintage biplane veered off a runway into the crowd during takeoff during an air show in Germany Sunday, killing a woman and injuring dozens, officials said.
The aviation news Internet site AV Web reported up to 5,000 spectators were on hand for the air show at Lillinghof airfield about 20 miles from Nuremberg.
The German newspaper Nurnberger Nachrichten reported that besides the 46-year-old woman who was killed when hit by the Tiger Moth's propeller, 38 people were hurt, five seriously.
"We were just having coffee, when suddenly the tables and benches were flying through the air -- and suddenly we had the propeller of the machine in front of us," one witness told the newspaper.
The aircraft pitched over on its nose but the pilot escaped without injury.
The cause of the crash was being investigated.
AV Web said it was the second air show fatality during the weekend in Germany, coming a day after a 50-year-old woman died when the hang glider she was flying crashed into a parked airplane at a show in Bavaria.
