Earthquake jars Christchurch, New Zealand

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Officials have declared a state of emergency in Christchurch, New Zealand, where a 7.1 magnitude earthquake and up to 30 aftershocks rattled the city Saturday.

A curfew is in place through 7 a.m. Sunday in Christchurch, where parts of the city have been declared off limits, Radio New Zealand reported.

There were no deaths reported, but many residents have been driven from their homes and water and electrical services have been disrupted in parts of the city.

Two people were seriously injured. One man was hit by a toppling chimney, while another was cut by glass. Emergency medical staff were treating numerous broken bones and contusions. At least one historic landmark, the Empire Hotel, was considered dangerously unstable, the report said.

As of Saturday morning, 90 percent of the city had electric power restored, but Roger Sutton, a spokesman for power company Orion, said it may take four days or longer for power to be restored across the city.

The initial earthquake hit at 4:35 Saturday morning, with the epicenter about 25 miles west of Christchurch.
