Tanker grounded in Northwest Passage

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- There appears to be no danger of spilled oil from a Canadian tanker grounded on a sandbar in the Northwest Passage, officials say.

The Nanny, owned by Coastal Shipping Limited of St. John's, Newfoundland, ran aground earlier this week. It is on a shoal in Simpson Strait near Gjoa Haven, the harbor where Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen spent almost two years during the first voyage through the passage, The Chronicle-Herald reported.

"She's just caught up on a sand bar, that's all," said Dennis White, spokesman for the owner.

Transport Canada confirmed there have been no reports of leaking or spilled oil, The Toronto Globe and Mail reported.

The tanker was making fuel deliveries to arctic communities in Nunavut.

On Aug. 28 a passenger ship, the Clipper Adventure, ran aground near Kugluktuk.
