Castro addresses students at U. of Havana

HAVANA, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Fidel Castro, in his first public speech in four years, spoke to students Friday at the University of Havana, talking about the dangers of nuclear war.

Castro, wearing the green uniform he first adopted as a guerrilla leader in the 1950s, addressed the students from the university steps, the Cuban News Agency reported. He told them there is a real danger of war breaking out in the Middle East that could destroy the world.

After almost half a century as president, Castro, believed to be seriously ill, ceded most of his responsibilities to his brother, Raul, in 2006. Since then, he has kept out of the public eye for the most part.

In his speech, Castro referred to a number of current news stories on issues like the effort to get China to support sanctions against Iran, Radio Cardena Agramonte said. He told the students that fair distribution of wealth is the way to save and develop the world.
