TORONTO, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A lawyer for an Iranian-born Canadian says he needs "every scrap of information" linking his client to terrorism in order to defend him.
The legal fight could delay the trial of Havi Alizadeh and his two co-defendants for several years, The Globe and Mail in Toronto reported. The three were arrested last week after an investigation involving Canadian police and also, apparently, security agencies.
Prosecutors say Alizadeh, 30, Misbahuddin Ahmed and Khurram Sher conspired in a plan to aid overseas terrorist organizations. Investigators seized circuit boards they say were to be used in bombs.
The three are being held without bail pending hearings. They appeared in court Wednesday via video link.
"We want every scrap of information there is," Sean May, Alizadeh's lawyer, said. "In fairness, we want to get everything about the case, about what investigative steps were taken by all agencies."
Last week, a Canadian Security Intelligence Service official said the agency conducted its own investigation and was not working with police. Charges were dropped in one terrorism case last year because intelligence agencies did not want to release information required under Canada's strict disclosure rules.
