LONDON, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The British Museum was emptied of about 8,000 patrons Saturday after some people complained of an odd odor and eye and throat irritation, police said.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the museum in London was evacuated "purely as a precaution," the BBC reported.

"We think it is something that got into the air conditioning system," the unidentified spokesman said.

An unnamed British Museum spokeswoman described the 12:30 p.m. episode as "a gas incident."

"There were no injuries but the museum was promptly evacuated," she said. "Police are investigating to ascertain what happened."

The city fire department also was summoned to the museum.
