Church members target gay residents

TORONTO, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Gay residents in a Toronto neighborhood clashed with members of a church group who loudly protest in front of homes, a resident said.

Geoff Skelding, who lives in the neighborhood where members of the Highfield Road Gospel Hall Church gather frequently to pray loudly against his neighbors' sexual orientation, captured on videotape an altercation during which the church members stood outside a gay couple's home and condemned them as sinners, CTV News in Canada reported Tuesday.

Skelding posted his video on Youtube, CTV News reported.

"We have a right to call the police. We don't want your kind of people on the street, you're hateful people, that's what you are, you're hateful," one of the residents said in the video.

"Freedom of speech. If you don't want to hear, go in your house, close the door," was a church member's response.

The church group eventually left to the sound of parting shouts from the residents, such as¸"You don't know what love means," "Stay the hell out of my neighborhood," and "You are not welcome," CTV News reported.

"Apparently they have been grouping in front of a couple's house and reading their Bible loudly for the past seven years," Skelding said.

"They may have also driven another couple from the area as well by doing the same thing. Tonight most of our neighbors came out and were successful in getting them to leave. The people who go to that church don't even live in our area," he said.
