TEHRAN, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Iran has successfully tested a new surface-to-surface missile with "exceptional tactical powers," a military official says.

"Being a new class of Iranian missiles, Qiam 1 has been equipped with new technical specifications and exceptional tactical powers," Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said in a Press TV report Friday.

The liquid-fueled missile was designed and built in Iran and is equipped with a navigation system designed give it additional protection from being targeted by other projectiles, the report said.

"The missile can hit targets with high precision," Vahidi said.

The report did not say when or where the test took place.
