LONDON, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Support for the British mission in Afghanistan has dropped as fewer people believe a successful outcome is likely, a poll released Tuesday indicated.

Angus Reid Public Opinion reported only 33 percent of the 2009 adults surveyed in August said they support the use of British forces in Afghanistan, a drop of 5 percentage points since June. More than half, 57 percent, said they oppose the mission.

Only 7 percent said a clear victory over the Taliban is a likely outcome, while 31 percent said they do not believe U.S. President Barack Obama can bring the war to a successful conclusion.

Only 46 percent said they know what the point of the Afghan war is. More than half, 54 percent, said Britain should not have become involved in military operations there.

Angus Reid, a Toronto-based polling company, surveyed members of its Springboard U.K. panel online between Aug. 4 and Aug. 6. The margin of error is 2.2 percent.
