COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A former Sri Lankan army chief says he will appeal through a civilian court for the rank, pension and medals stripped from him by a military court martial.
Sarath Fonseka, 59, was the island nation's only four-star general until he was convicted of participating in politics while in active service, the Press Trust of India reported Sunday.
"It is unacceptable and a humorous joke," Fonseka said.
Fonseka is now a parliamentarian who leads the Democratic National Alliance party.
"We will go to the Court of Appeal. We will mobilize public support and protest against the decision," Alliance spokesman Anura Kumara Dissanayake said a day after President Mahinda Rajapaksa approved the court-martial's verdict on Fonseka.
Rajapaksa and Fonseca had once been close, but the allies had a falling out resulting in Fonseca challenging his former friend in an ill-fated run for the presidency of Sri Lanka, the newspaper said.
