Sleeping workers die in Dubai fire

Aug. 11, 2010 at 9:54 AM   |   Comments

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A fire killed 11 people who were sleeping on the floor at their workplace in the United Arab Emirates, police in Dubai say.

Major Gen. Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, the acting chief of police, said the dead workers were employed by a company that specialized in perfumes, Gulf News reported Wednesday.

Mazeina said the manager of the company and his two partners have been arrested in connection with the deaths.

"It is a violation to have workers residing in the company," he said. "They should have followed safety and security regulations by offering their workers proper accommodation."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
