LYON, France, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- The body of a missing chef has been discovered in a freezer in Lyon, France, and his girlfriend is in custody, authorities said Wednesday.

Lyon police told CNN the body of retired restaurateur Jean-Francois Poinard, 71, was found Tuesday in an apartment he had shared with his 51-year-old girlfriend after authorities received a tip. Poinard had vanished two years ago.

The Daily Telegraph reported Poinard's body was found in the fetal position and was covered with plastic bags.

In the 1970s and '80s, Poinard was considered a top chef in a city known for its fine cuisine.

Sky News reported investigators said Poinard's girlfriend, Guylene Collober, allegedly told her daughter "something unfortunate" had happened to him. The daughter then allegedly informed police, the British television network said.

"An initial examination suggests the body could have been there for up to two years," Sky News quoted a police spokesman as saying. "A full post-mortem examination will be carried out to discover the precise cause of death."

He said Collober is charged with hiding a body with additional charges pending the outcome of the autopsy.
