AUGUSTA, Ga., Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The pilot of a small plane that crashed in a wooded area in eastern Georgia early Tuesday was killed, authorities say.

The pilot of the Piper PA32 single-engine plane reported engine problems before the crash around 2:05 a.m. near Washington, Ga., the Augusta Chronicle reported.

Crews found a burning crash site about 3 miles from the Washington-Wilkes County Airport.

Federal Aviation Authority spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen in Atlanta said the airplane was on its way to Mount Pleasant Regional Airport in Mount Pleasant, S.C., from Madison County Executive Airport in Huntsville, Ala.

The pilot, who has not been identified, was the only person on board, Bergen said.
