Warrants over alleged coup plot dropped

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- More than 100 arrest warrants issued over an alleged 2003 coup plot in Turkey have been annulled, officials say.

The accused were allegedly plotting a military takeover at the Istanbul base of the First Army and were indicted in July, the BBC reported Saturday. They were accused of being part of an operation called "Sledgehammer," the report said.

The group was alleged to be making plans to blow up mosques and provoke tensions with Greece that would justify a military takeover. However, those accused in the matter said they were only making contingency plans based on various scenarios of political unrest.

The annulments come days after the military agreed not to promote some of the accused officers, the BBC reported.
