MONTREAL, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Doctors said former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien was recovering Saturday after brain surgery in Montreal and should be released sometime next week.
Chretien, 76, underwent surgery Friday at Jewish General Hospital to treat a buildup of blood on the right side of his head.
The subdural hematoma procedure was successful. The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said more details would be released later Saturday.
Chretien was prime minister from 1993 until 2003 and in high-level positions in the governments of Pierre Trudeau and John Turner. He was elected head of the Liberal Party in 1990.
