KATHMANDU, Nepal, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Nepal's parliament failed to choose a new prime minister Tuesday after neither of the main candidates managed to secure the necessary 301 votes, officials said.

In the absence of a clear majority, lawmakers scheduled another vote for Friday, the Himalayan News Service reported.

Tuesday's vote was the third effort to select a leader for Nepal.

Of the 581 lawmakers present, Pushpa Kamal Dahal of the Unified CPN-Maoist party secured only 259 votes while his rival Nepali Congress' Ram Chandra Paudel received 124.

Parliamentary regulations call for voting to be carried out until one candidate secures a clear majority.
