PESHAWAR, Pakistan, July 31 (UPI) -- The United Nations says at least 1 million people have been affected by serious, deadly flooding taking place in northwestern Pakistan.

The New York Times reported the death toll from the flooding, the worst since 1929, had reached at least 800 with more rain in the forecast.

The BBC reported Saturday the United Nations has been pitching in with disaster relief and there is concern the floods could surge into other provinces as rain continues.

Relief efforts went at a slow pace Saturday, which Pakistan's Dawn newspaper said was beginning to anger residents of communities either inundated by water or cut off from the outside world due to landslides.

Dawn said protests have taken place in some towns where residents are demanding the government fly stranded people out of hard-hit areas by helicopter.
