BANGKOK, July 30 (UPI) -- A man picking through trash was seriously hurt early Friday when a hand grenade left in a dumpster near a Bangkok shopping center exploded.
The bombing was the second this week in the Thai capital, the Bangkok Post reported. One person was killed Sunday in an explosion at a bus stop.
The scavenger was hospitalized. Police did not release his name.
Maj. Gen. Wichai Sangprapai, chief of Metropolitan Police Division 1, said the grenade's pin had been removed and a rubber band held the trigger mechanism closed. The grenade was hidden in a plastic bag.
Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the bombings have been carried out by people hoping to prove the government is incapable of maintaining order.
Bangkok and nine provinces remain under emergency control restrictions after months of demonstrations, riots and violence.
