ROME, July 30 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi appears to have lost his majority in the Italian Parliament after a nasty split with an old ally he called a traitor.
Gianfranco Fini refused Thursday to resign as speaker of the lower house, The Daily Telegraph reported. Berlusconi then accused him of betrayal, prompting a split within the People of Freedom Party, which the prime minister and Fini founded together.
Berlusconi's majority came from his own party and the Northern League. Fini objected to concessions to the separatist League but his departure with his allies is likely to give the group more power.
Berlusconi now has 311 seats in the lower house, five short of a majority. He could still pick up enough support from representatives of small parties to get some legislation passed.
Fini, 58, is a former Fascist who has remade himself into a conservative.
