BEIJING, July 29 (UPI) -- Tests indicate the Songhua River in China's Jilin province is chemical-free after floods swept thousands of chemical-filled barrels into it, officials said.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection said it sent a team to the region to handle the emergency and to increase monitoring of the river's water quality, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
More than 7,000 barrels washed into the Songhua River in Jilin province Wednesday after rain-triggered floods swamped a chemical plant, Xinhua said.
Tests conducted early Thursday indicate no contamination in Zhaoyuan County in Heilongjiang province, downstream from the plant.
Government officials said 3,000 barrels contained about 77 pounds of chemicals each and 4,000 barrels were empty. The chemicals were not identified.
