KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, July 29 (UPI) -- A boat packed with passengers and cargo capsized on the Kasai River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 140 people, officials said.

The strife-torn African country's information minister said the boat was overloaded and confirmed 80 deaths, the BBC reported. The accident happened Wednesday, the British broadcaster said.

In November, 73 people drowned when a boat sank on Lake Mai-Ndombe. Both sinkings occurred in Bandundu province, which has few paved roads or rail links.
