CARACAS, Venezuela, July 23 (UPI) -- Venezuela says it is cutting diplomatic ties with neighboring Colombia amid allegations the Caracas government is harboring leftist guerrillas.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Friday angrily denied Colombia's charges that the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia had established camps in his country.

"We have no choice, out of dignity, but to totally break our relations with our sister Colombia," Chavez said at a news conference.

The Peruvian Times said Chavez also told reporters he had ordered a "heightened alert" along the 1,400-mile border between the two nations.

The crisis comes less than a month before the inauguration of Colombia's new president, Juan Manuel Santos. Santos was defense minister for the current president, Alvaro Uribe. Chavez Friday accused Uribe of "showing signs of lunacy."

The Wall Street Journal said the reaction on the streets of Caracas was divided between people who consider Colombia to be a puppet of the United States and others who suspected Chavez of covering up his support of FARC.
