Ex-girlfriend describes ambush by gunman

GATESHEAD, England, July 17 (UPI) -- The former girlfriend of British gunman Raoul Moat described publicly for the first time Saturday how he ambushed her and her new boyfriend.

Samantha Stobbart, 22, survived after Moat shot her in the arm, but Chris Brown, 29, a karate teacher, was killed. Days later, Moat, who also shot a police officer in the face, took his own life as police closed in.

Stobbart told the Daily Mirror she cannot return to her home in Gateshead.

"It is too painful to even think about being there," she said. "I know Raoul wanted to scar me as some sort of lesson, which is why I can't let him win."

She said she plans to defeat him by living a "normal life" with their 3-year-old daughter Chanel.

Stobbart said she and Brown had just left a friend's house after a "happy evening" and found Moat lying in wait.

Angus Moat, the killer's brother, told The Guardian he is horrified by the tributes paid to him on line and by what his brother did but "heartbroken" at his death.

"I accept what he did was wrong, but I would rather have seen an outcome where he was arrested and sentenced and treated accordingly, rather than an execution on a hillside," Angus Moat said. "But to die on that bank, suicidal and lonely -- it broke my heart."
