New aid ship making its way to Gaza

JERUSALEM, July 11 (UPI) -- An aid ship intends to break Israel's blockade of Gaza, but its crew will not resist if the ship is stopped by Israeli forces, the ship's organizers say.

Organized by a charity headed by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's son, the ship left Greece Saturday carrying 2,000 tons of supplies, CNN reported.

The ship would arrive in Gaza after a voyage of about 3 days, Youssef Sawani, the executive director of the Gadhafi Foundation, said.

"This is purely a humanitarian effort," Sawani said. "The Israelis should seize this opportunity and allow the goods into Gaza."

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak called the ship "an unnecessary provocation."

The ship would not be allowed to dock in Gaza, Barak said, but Israel would allow it to unload goods elsewhere and would allow the supplies to enter the Palestinian territory by land after an inspection.

Israeli commandos boarded a Turkish aid ship in May, leading to a violent confrontation that left nine Turks dead and severely damaged Israeli-Turkish relations, CNN said.
