OTTAWA, July 8 (UPI) -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will name legal scholar David Johnson as the next governor general, a Canadian news organization has learned.
A formal announcement of Johnson's selection may come as early as today, CTV reported Thursday.
Johnson, 69, is currently the president of the University of Waterloo.
He previously served 15 years as the principal and vice chancellor of McGill University.
The special committee set up to find a governor general ruled out anyone from the fields of sports, entertainment and the arts.
Panel members said they felt the person selected should be well versed in constitutional matters and parliamentary procedures just in case Canada found itself in an extended period of minority governments.
CTV said Queen Elizabeth approved the appointment.
