Report seeks help for women in slums

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 7 (UPI) -- Kenyan women in Nairobi's slums are so afraid of sexual assault they won't leave their homes at night to use communal bathroom facilities, a new report says.

The report, prepared by Amnesty International, calls on the government of Kenya to do something about the poor access to sanitation experienced by women and girls who live in the slums.

Amnesty International told a news conference in Nairobi Wednesday that the problems for women living in Nairobi's slums are compounded by a lack of police presence.

The group says the largest slum, Kibera, is home to as many as a million people yet it has no police post on site.

As a result, women who fall victim to violence are unlikely to see justice done, Amnesty International says.
