Brawl breaks out in Italian parliament

ROME, July 7 (UPI) -- A brawl erupted between the ruling and opposition parties in Italy's Parliament Wednesday, forcing officials to call a 10-minute recess, observers said.

The trouble began during a debate on funding new social centers for young people, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

Franco Barbato, a member of the Italy of Values party, accused Youth Minister Giorgia Meloni of pushing the youth center measure to advance her own political agenda.

MP Barbara Saltamartini was restrained by ushers from reaching Barbato before a brawl broke out between members of the two parties.

At least one MP resorted to name-calling while another came close to striking a member of his own party.

A 10-minute recess was called but tensions were reportedly still quite high after the session resumed, ANSA said.
