Braking for ducks causes fatal crash

MONTREAL, June 29 (UPI) -- A Canadian man and his teenage daughter were killed when their motorcycle hit a car that had stopped to allow some ducks to cross safely.

The dead were identified as Andre Roy, 50, and Jessie Roy, 16, of St. Constant, The (Montreal) Gazette reported. Jessie was riding pillion behind her father, who apparently did not have time to brake or change course when the car stopped Sunday about 7:30 p.m. on the South Shore of the St. Lawrence River near Montreal, police said.

Pauline Volikakis, 43, Roy's wife and Jessie's mother, was on another motorcycle and survived with injuries.

Police have said the driver could face criminal charges. But Volikakis said she believes the woman has been punished enough.

"Charges against this girl won't bring back the two people who died," Volikakis told the Gazette early Tuesday. "She saw them die, both of them. That's enough of a punishment for a young woman of only 20 years old."

Quebec police Sgt. Richard Gagne said drivers can only stop for emergencies or when the stop will not endanger anyone. He said avoiding running over small animals does not constitute an emergency.
