Kyrgyz government ends Osh curfew

OSH, Kyrgyzstan, June 26 (UPI) -- A curfew in Osh, the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan, was lifted Saturday, more than two weeks after rioting began in the region.

Police continue to have checkpoints in the city, the Russian news agency ITAR-Tass reported.

Much of the violence that began June 10 in Osh and spread to the Jalalabat region in southern Kyrgyzstan was aimed at ethnic Uzbeks. In April, after President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was driven from the capital, Bishkek, he fled to Osh and remained there for a few days before resigning and leaving the country.

Interim President Roza Otunbayeva said a curfew could be reinstated in Osh after Sunday's vote on proposed constitutional changes.

Officials say at least 275 people were killed in Osh and Jalalabat during this month's riots, at least 2,200 were injured and dozens are still missing.
