Britain to set immigration cap

LONDON, June 26 (UPI) -- Britain will announce a cap on immigration to reduce the number of foreign workers entering the country, authorities said.

Home Secretary Theresa May is expected to announce an immediate temporary limit on migrant workers while a long-term permanent cap figure is considered, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to reduce immigration, presently 176,000 a year, down to "tens of thousands" and says an annual cap is the only realistic method of achieving that, the newspaper reported.

A total of 190,640 foreign workers and dependants entered Britain in 2009, despite unemployment hitting 2.5 million.

Figures released this month showed more than 1.1 million jobs, half the total created under the Labor government, were taken by immigrants.

"This proves that immigration was out of control under Labor," May said, "and it proves beyond doubt the dishonesty of their 'British jobs for British workers' campaign."
