TOKYO, June 13 (UPI) -- A large area of northern Japan was jolted Sunday by an earthquake seismologists said had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, officials said.

Emergency agencies told the Kyodo News agency that it appeared no one was injured in the early afternoon quake and there was no significant damage.

Bullet-train operations were suspended for about 10 minutes and an information office at the prime minister's office was opened. Two nuclear power plants in the region continued normal operations.

The U.S. Geological Survey in the United States measured the quake at 6.1 on the Richter Scale and said it was centered near the east coast of the island of Honshu, CNN reported.
