Motorcyclist may have caused bus crash

BERNE, Switzerland, June 13 (UPI) -- Police say a motorcyclist may have caused the crash of a bus carrying a Canadian tour group in Switzerland that killed a married couple and injured 28.

The 73-year-old German bus driver said he was trying to avoid a motorcyclist who cut in front of him, Canadian Broadcast Corp. news reported.

A group of motorbikes initially passed the bus about 50 miles from the Swiss capital of Bern, the driver said. Then a single bike, which may have been racing to catch up, passed the bus and cut in front of it, the driver reported.

The bus went off the road, fell about 15 feet into a field and landed on its side, the CBC reported.

The two killed in the Saturday crash were a married couple, investigators said. Their identities were not released, but officials say the man was 71, the woman 67, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. news reported.

Thirteen of the injured were still in hospital Sunday, the CBC said.

The group of 48 Canadian retirees on the bus was on a tour featuring a performance of a Passion play in Upper Bavaria, as well as travel through Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Liechtenstein.
