Possible sex charge for murder suspect

OTTAWA, June 11 (UPI) -- A Canadian Mountie facing murder charges in the death of an Ottawa police officer may be charged with sexual assault in a different incident, officials say.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer Kevin Reid Gregson is alleged to have fatally stabbed Police Constable Eric Czapnik outside an Ottawa hospital in December 2009, The Ottawa Citizen reported Friday.

The possible charge of sexual assault on a minor is from an unrelated incident occurring around Christmas, the newspaper said.

A month before his arrest on charges of killing Czapnik, Gregson had been ordered to either resign from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or be fired for violating conditions related to a disciplinary hearing.

Days before the slaying of Czapnik, Gregson's second wife announced she was leaving him, the Citizen said.

Just hours before the killing, Gregson reportedly posted on an Internet social network site, "Life sometimes just runs you over. It doesn't matter how hard you try."

Referring to the possible new charge, Gregson's lawyer said it would be denied.

"If a charge is laid," Geraldine Castle-Trudel said, "it will be denied and vigorously defended."
