Preliminary reports from rescue workers indicate the blast at the Kuzneskiye Ferrosplavy plant was caused by an explosion of ferrosilicium dust.

Investigators and forensic experts have been sent to the city of Novokuznetsk in the Kemerovo region where the plant is located.

Last month, two methane blasts at a coal mine in the region killed 67 workers. In addition, 23 workers remain unaccounted for.
