KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 30 (UPI) -- The commander of Canadian forces in Afghanistan has been fired amid allegations of conduct unbecoming an officer, military authorities said.
Brig. Gen. Daniel Menard was sacked by Lt. Gen. Marc Lessard, who commands all Canadian troops overseas, after allegations of an inappropriate intimate relation with a member of Canada's Task Force Kandahar, Canwest News Service reported Sunday.
Menard, 42, who was scheduled to command NATO's largest campaign of the war in Kandahar in coming weeks, will instead return to Canada while an investigation is conducted, Canwest said.
Under standing orders, Canadian personnel in Afghanistan are subject to strict rules governing behavior with each other, and no intimate personal relationships are allowed, a military spokesman said.
Until a replacement for Menard arrives from Canada, deputy commander Col. Simon Hetherington will lead the country's 2,800 troops in Afghanistan.
"I am not happy to bring you this news," Hetherington told reporters. "It is what it is."
