Heavy rains threaten Haitian refugee camps

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, May 25 (UPI) -- Heavy rains in Haiti this week threaten the safety of hundreds of thousands of people living in makeshift tents since January's devastating earthquake.

The potential for flash flooding and mudslides is exacerbated by deforestation and hillsides left unstable by the 7-magnitude temblor, AccuWeather.com reported Tuesday.

Rainfall of 5 to 10 inches is expected, with higher amounts in the mountains.

AccuWeather also forecast a Top 10 hurricane season for the Caribbean, warning that high winds could decimate the shoddy refugee camps, putting hundreds, if not thousands, of lives at risk.
